WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

WE ARE WAITING FOR GOODLUCK, ADOKI

Coach of the National wheelchair basketball team, Adoki Obererilene, has called on the federal government to fulfill its promise of rewarding sportsmen who have done the nation proud.

Adoki who also doubles as the Technical Director of The Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, (NWBF), said the team is patiently waiting on President Goodluck Jonathan to invite them to the presidential villa.

The national wheelchair basketball team won a silver medal at the Africa U-23 Wheelchair Basketball tournament held between March 29 and April 6, in South Africa but failed to qualify for the 2013 edition of the World U-23 Wheelchair Basketball tournament in Turkey later in the year to South Africa as they lost in the final to them by 42-26.

However, the team has intensified preparations to perform well at the African Wheelchair Basketball Championship billed for Angola from October 24 to November 3.

SCRABBLE

AKPABIO BOOSTS SCRABBLE FEDERATION

Akwa Ibom State Governor  Godswill Akpabio  has donated N10m  to the Nigeria Scrabble Federation  for the country’s participation at the World Scrabble Championship taking place in Czech Republic in December.

Akpabio made the donation when he hosted officials and participants in the 7th Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics to a dinner in Uyo.

President of NSF, Mr. Toke Aka, said   the association was proud of  Akpabio and promised  that the players would do their best to win the world trophy.

He appealed to other governors to emulate Akpabio, who he said, had given his time and resources to the development of Scrabble in the country.

According to him, scrabble is important as it builds the intellect and vocabularies of those who play the game.

The high point of the event was conferment of African Pillar of Scrabble award on Akapbio by the Pan African Scrabble Association for his support to the growth of the game in Africa.

 

TRIATHLON

600 ATHLETES PARTICIPATE IN LAGOS TRIATHLON

Lagos State Triathlon Association said it had well over 600 participants from schools, clubs and the military in this year’s Triathlon fiesta at Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos.

Chairman of the Lagos State Triathlon Association, Dr. Sikuade Jagun revealed to us that this year’s event which marks its second edition was occasioned by the huge success of previous year’s edition which had about 300 participants basically from schools and clubs

Dr Jagun also said that their target was eight groups from six to 18 and that means primary and secondary schools adding that the aim of the fiesta was to discover talents and nurture them to stardom through the “Adopt a talent” programme of Lagos state government.

GOLDEN EAGLETS COACH PICKS WORLD CUP SQUAD

Nigeria’s U-17 Team Head Coach, Manu Garba listed 21 players to fly Nigeria’s flag at the 15th FIFA U-17 World Cup finals taking place in the United Arab Emirates between 17th October – 8th November, 2013.

Captain Mohammed Musa, striker Isaac Success and midfield linchpin Idowu Akinjide lead the pack of the youngsters who will be aiming to make Nigeria the first country to lift the trophy for a fourth time.

Earlier success in 1985, 1993 and 2007, and runner-up position in 1987, 2001 and 2009 pinpoint the Golden Eaglets as one of the teams to watch at this year’s fiesta in the Emirates.
Manu Garba also picked Bello Zaraddeen, Japhet Raymond, Musa Yahaya, Chidera Ezeh, Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alfa Abdullahi,

Chigozie Obasi, Abubakar Abdulazeez, Baba Salihu, Godwin Saviour, Habeeb Makanjuola, Okon Denis, Uzoha Odinaka, Chidiebere Nwakali,
Abubakar Aliu, Godwin Samuel and Sunday Alampasu.

Nigeria play reigning world champions Mexico, Sweden and Iraq in Group F of the tournament, with the Eaglets’ first game against the Mexicans coming up in Al Ain City on 19th October.

However, the team’s media officer, Morakinyo Abodunrin in a chat disclosed that the team has been gearing to start the competition. He said they were warmly received by the ambassador on arrival in UAE.

 

NPFL: NFF AWARD KWARA UTD POINTS TO WARRI WOLVES

The Appeals Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation during the week awarded the three points and three goals in the disputed game between Kwara United and Warri Wolves to the Delta state side.

The decision overturned the earlier verdict of the NFF O&D Committee, which said that the game be replayed.

The NFF Appeal body decision is final, and the cases cannot be taken any further.

PORTUGAL-BASED PLAYER URGES UPCOMING TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS TO SHOW WILLINGNESS TO LEARN

Gbenga Anthony, a Portugal-based table tennis player has advised upcoming players to be more focused in order to ensure that the country was ranked among the top 50 in the world

Anthony, who plays for Unioa Sebastiano Tenis de Mesa, said that if the upcoming players continued with the good performance, they could rank among the best in the African continent.

According to him, the corporate organisations could also rally to the aid of the sport by supporting the upcoming players through sponsorships.

He said that all they needed at the current stage were all the exposures they could get for them to improve.

Anthony said that with the new president and executive in the board of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, the sport would develop.

He also expressed optimism that with the new board, the sport stood a good chance of making faster progress.

FIBA WORLD CUP SLOT: THERE IS STILL HOPE, BAKARE.

Despite Nigeria’s poor outing at the 2013 Afrobasket championship which saw the country crash out in the quarter final to Senegal, there are hopes that the Nigerian flag may be hoisted at the FIBA World Cup next year.

This was made known by head coach of D’Tigers, Ayo Bakare who hinted that Nigeria’s previous performances in international competitions will be considered in given the country a wild card slot.

 

DEDEVBO TO LEAD NEW COACHING CREW FOR FALCONETS

The Nigeria Football Federation has named former Head Coach of the U-17 Women’s National Team, Peter Dedevbo as Head Coach of the U-20 Women’s Team, nicknamed Falconets.

Dedevbo was an Assistant Coach of the first-ever U-17 Women’s Team, which featured at the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals in New Zealand in 2008. He was later appointed Head Coach of the team, and led the girls to quarter final berths in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010 and Azerbaijan in 2012.

He will be assisted by Toyin Ayinla, a former Captain and defensive stalwart of Abiola Babes FC of Abeokuta, at the time that club dominated Nigeria’s domestic game. Ayinla also featured for the Senior National Team. The goalkeeper trainer is Haruna Uche.

Already, Dedevbo has invited to camp 30 players for screening as the race for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Canada in August 2014, gets underway this month. Nigeria’s Falconets, runners-up at the World Cup in Germany in 2010 and semifinalists in Japan in 2012, are up against the U-20 Women’s Team of Burkina Faso in the African first round fixtures, with the first leg coming up in Nigeria in the last weekend of this month.

Dedevbo and crew will open their camp in Abuja on Monday.

POOR MANAGEMENT, PROBLEM OF NIGERIAN LEAGUE, OKOCHA.

Former Super Eagles Captain and Ex-international, Austin Jay Jay Okocha has lamented the poor running of the Nigeria Professional Football league, arguing that the NPFL has not set any form of agenda for the league this season but runs the game the way they like.

Okocha hinted that it is a shame that the league does not attract people going to the stadium to watch matches because the league still runs in its old fashion of poor facilities, poor pitches in various venues, poor media coverage, insecurity and lack of sponsorship for the game amongst others.

He argued that this is the reason why Nigerians prefer to watch the foreign leagues.

He also added that Nigeria has a rich pool of talented players from the domestic scene that can contend with teams in the continent and the world if appropriate planning and management structure is put in place.

WCQ: OKORONWANTA, OLISEH WARN EAGLES AHEAD OF ETHIOPIA CLASH

Former Super Eagles Captain Sunday Oliseh has fired a warning shot to the Super Eagles ahead of Sunday’s first leg final World Cup play-off qualifying match against the Wayla Antelopes of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

Oliseh warned that the Eagles’ greatest undoing will be to underestimate their Ethiopian counterparts in the run for qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Also, ex-international Tarila Okoronwanta in a chat revealed that the eagles have to play as a team if they have to defeat their opponents. He added that he is confident that the African champions will be victorious on Sunday.

Though, Nigeria were 2-0 winners via  two late penalty strikes from Victor Moses in the last meeting against Ethiopia at the last Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, Okoronwanta warned that the Ethiopians have improved a great deal and thus will pose a greater threat than then were in South Africa earlier this year.

Already 23 Super Eagles players are sweating it out in training to make it into coach Stephen Keshi’s team.

 

NPFL: LMC to tailor 2014 season for World Cup

The league Management Committee (LMC) have said that it will tailor the 2013/2014 football season on such a way that it will not overlap with the FIFA World Cup.

To this end, the LMC has, in a series of messages on Twitter, the social media platform, outlined the plans for the new season.  The LMC said that the registration of players for the new season will commence immediately after the end of the 2013 season, which is on track to end October 20th.

And January 2nd 2014 has been set as close of registration date, with no possibility of extension.

LMC member Mike Enahoro who made the announcements on Wednesday night after a marathon meeting, said they are going to adhere strictly to the timelines and ensure that the season ends before the 2014 World Cup to streamline our season.

The Nigeria football season has always overlapped with the FIFA World Cup and matches are sometimes stopped, as NFF officials travel with the Super Eagles to watch the Mundial.

Goal line technology lands in Africa

World football governing body, FIFA, have announced that goal line technology will be used on the African continent for the first time ever, when Morocco hosts the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2013. 
The declaration was made when the official draw ceremony for the FIFA Club World Cup, Morocco 2013 took place on Thursday in Marrakech.

However, this will be the third time that FIFA will use goal-line technology, after it was launched during the 2012 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan and the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013.
The announcement was made by the head of the Local Organising Committee, Ali Fassi Fihri.
